Mushroom coffee subscription: is subscribe and save worth it, with the maths

Subscriptions in food and drink have a reputation problem: hard to cancel, easy to forget, and priced so the discount looks bigger than it is. So this is a plain account of how the Mello subscription works, what it costs per cup against a one off and a multi pack, and the situations where you should not subscribe at all.

The numbers

A single pouch of Mello Mushroom Coffee or Mushroom Matcha is $49.99 for 30 serves, about $1.67 a cup. Two pouches one off are $89.98, $1.50 a cup. Three pouches one off are $119.98, $1.33 a cup. Subscribe and save takes 18% off, which brings a single pouch to about $41 and $1.37 a cup, delivered on the interval you set. Every option ships free Australia wide. The full table is on our cost per cup page.

Subscription versus three pack

This is the comparison that matters. A three pack one off is $1.33 a cup. A single pouch subscription is $1.37 a cup. So the three pack is very slightly cheaper per cup, and the subscription wins on cash flow, one pouch a month at $41 rather than $120 up front. If you drink one cup a day, the two are a wash on price and the choice is whether you would rather pay monthly or quarterly. If you drink two cups a day, a two pouch subscription every month is the cheapest steady option at about $1.37 a cup with no large outlay.

How the interval works

You choose the delivery gap from the options on the product page when you subscribe. One cup a day is a pouch a month. One cup on work days is a pouch every six weeks, so pick the longer interval and adjust if you run short rather than building a stockpile. Two cups a day is two pouches a month.

Pausing, skipping and cancelling

You can skip a delivery, change the interval, swap between coffee and matcha, or cancel from the subscription link in your order emails, before the next order is processed. There is no minimum term and no cancellation fee. If the link is not working, an email to us through the contact page before the processing date does the same thing. We built it this way because a subscription that is hard to leave is the reason people distrust subscriptions, and we would rather you came back than felt trapped.

When a one off is the better buy

Three cases. First, if you have not tried Mello yet. Buy one pouch, drink it for a fortnight, and decide; the 30 day money back guarantee applies either way, but a subscription you cancel after one delivery is more admin than a single order. Second, if your pace is irregular, a few cups one week and none the next, because the arithmetic of a fixed interval only works for a steady habit. Third, if you want to stock up for a known period, a trip or a busy month, when a three pack at $1.33 is the cheapest single purchase.

When a subscription is the better buy

When you have a steady daily habit and you would rather not think about reordering. The 18% is real, the per cup price matches a three pack, and the pouch arrives before you run out. That is the whole offer; there is no other reason to subscribe and we are not going to invent one.

A worked example

Say you drink one cup every morning. A month is 30 cups. One off, that is a pouch at $49.99. Subscribed, it is about $41. Over a year the difference is a little over $100, which is roughly two months of coffee. Against a cafe habit the numbers are in another league: 30 flat whites at $5.50 is $165 a month, so either Mello option saves more than $100 a month and the subscription saves $124. The subscription is not the big saving; giving up the cafe is. The subscription is the small saving on top for not having to remember.

Checking the arithmetic yourself

Price divided by serves, for the way you would actually buy. One off $49.99 divided by 30 is $1.67. Subscription about $41 divided by 30 is $1.37. Three pack $119.98 divided by 90 is $1.33. Those three numbers are the whole decision, and they are the same numbers we would use to compare any other pouch.

What does not change

The product is identical. Same six mushroom blend listed on the pack, same about 48mg of caffeine a serve, same 30 serves, same coconut milk powder and MCT oil in the coffee, same matcha in the green pouch. Subscription pouches are pulled from the same stock as one off orders, so there is no difference in freshness. Our cost per cup article explains how to compare any pouch on the shelf, including ours, if you want to check the arithmetic against another brand.

The caveat

A subscription does not change who should drink it. Anyone with a mushroom allergy should avoid both blends. The coffee contains coconut milk and MCT oil, so a coconut allergy means the matcha or neither. Anyone pregnant, breastfeeding, on medication or managing a medical condition should check with a GP or pharmacist before adding a mushroom extract. What the research does and does not show is on our research pages. Both pouches ship free Australia wide and carry a 30 day money back guarantee, on a subscription or a one off.
